More Yuppies Eyeing IT Jobs

AS timely as today revolutionary ideas, young Americans seemed to have set their sights on landing a job in the Information Technology sector.

These kids, who once dreamt of becoming doctors, lawyers or teachers, could be right. After all, that is where the money is.  In fact, the federal government sees IT jobs as the highest paying work ever in 25 years.

While there are still a handful of children who'd opt for a degree from a reputable university, most of us would have been satisfied and half fulfilled given a computer station inside an office located in a financial district ' not as CEO of a publicly listed firm but as an IT personnel.

Healthy Paychecks

Why not? Salary of supervisory positions in an office still falls short of what IT personnel gets.

Even the young urban professionals (or simply Yuppies) have reportedly been slowly shifting to IT jobs, where paychecks are comparatively higher.

At a time when the IT industry appears unstoppable (despite financial meltdown), IT firms are offering twice as much as the minimum pay for a start. It may even go beyond another fold or twice as much the starting salary if one gets to be distinctively good.

Treasure Chest

Interestingly, the sprawling number of IT-based entities in the United States and elsewhere has shown what could best be described as a phenomenal hit at a time when most industries around the world are suffering from recession. But while these IT firms are doing good business, the sector largely contributes to employment generation.

These IT firms are also falls among the top tax payers, which makes the Federal government a little apprehensive in the event US gets hit with another economic crisis.

Cities and towns hosting IT firms have also been reportedly getting the biggest chunk of their tax collection from the IT sector and the people working for the industry. To them, the IT sector is a gold find.

Jumping Ship

Professionals (degree holders) have also been reportedly taking IT courses in an apparent effort to land an IT portfolio. English teachers would even be willing to skip classes if only to guarantee her a slot in an IT office. Nursing grads (who have been having a hard time securing a license) are also amenable to the idea of taking up IT courses while waiting for the result of their licensure exam.  The logic perhaps is to secure a fallback in case they don't make it as a registered nurse.

Soon enough, even the cops, non-Bar passers, the journalists, health professionals, social workers and others in the allied services would go similar way. More and more are seriously considering a radical shift in their career, because of the handsome pay.

Soon enough, US would be facing a shortage in doctors, lawyers, teachers among others, because nobody seemed interested to work long hours for less.

Some sort of gap has also to be filled up in other allied professions, where a significant number from among them opted to hop in to the hottest job of the modern times. Unless steps to rationalize the salary of the professionals, there is higher probability of teacher-less classrooms, doctor-less hospitals and cop-less police stations.

In what appears to be an imbalance, it is imperative that a study be made as how to rationalize the gains of the IT industry if only to allow the other alleviated labors to move up. GP
